How to open HEIC files on Windows (convert to JPG, free)

Photos copied from an iPhone often arrive as .HEIC files that Windows Photos won't open without an extra codec. Turning them into JPG takes a few seconds in your browser.

Open the tool

Step by step

  1. Open the image tools on your Windows PC (Chrome or Edge) and choose the Convert tab.
  2. Drag your .HEIC or .HEIF files onto the box, or click it to choose them. You can add a whole folder's worth at once.
  3. Under Save as, leave Keep original format (HEIC → JPG) selected. Lower Quality if you want smaller files; 80 is a good default.
  4. Press Convert, then Save on each photo, or Save all as ZIP to get them in one download.
  5. Open the JPG files in Photos, Word, email or any other program as usual.

Good to know

  • The first time you convert a HEIC photo in Chrome or Edge, the page downloads a converter once. Your photo itself is never sent.
  • Want PNG instead? Pick PNG under Save as before converting.
  • GPS location and other photo details are removed when you save, which is handy before sharing.

Is it safe?

Yes. Conversion runs inside your browser, in a sealed area with no internet access. Your iPhone photos never leave your PC.
